Allen County Jail Project Marks Milestone With Steel Topping-Off Ceremony

Allen County officials, including Sheriff Troy Hershberger and the County Commissioners, joined Elevatus Architecture, Weigand Construction, and community leaders to mark a key milestone in the construction of the new Allen County Jail with a Steel Topping-Off Ceremony.

With the final beam now in place, the project has reached 40 percent completion, shared Weigand Construction CEO Larry Weigand. More than 180,000 work hours have already been invested, and the facility remains on track to open in 2027.

The new detention center will replace the county’s outdated jail, providing a safer, more modern environment for both staff and inmates. Designed with safety, security, and rehabilitation at its core, the facility will include dedicated areas for education, behavioral health, and programming.

Sheriff Hershberger emphasized the importance of building with staff in mind, recognizing the difficult and often dangerous work of today’s confinement officers:

“We are not just building a new facility. We are building for the future of public safety, rehabilitation, and our community.”

Elevatus Architecture is proud to serve as architect, with Weigand Construction as construction manager. Both firms, rooted in the Allen County community, are honored to help deliver a facility designed to serve residents for decades to come.

“Today marks a significant milestone for Allen County as we place this beam of steel into place. We’re not just building a new facility. We are building for the future of public safety, rehabilitation and our community. This project represents years of planning, partnership and dedication. It stands as a symbol of progress, not only in the way we house individuals in our care, but in the way we provide opportunities for change, accountability and rehabilitation.”
