Intern Reflections: Learning Through Design | Logan Kien
As my summer internship at Elevatus comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on how incredible this experience has been. This was my first summer working at an architecture firm, and I wasn’t sure what to expect going into it.
Throughout the summer, I was introduced to a wide variety of projects that provided valuable learning experiences. One of the first projects I worked on was Champion City Sports in Springfield, Ohio. On this project, I assisted with exterior design concepts, building signage, elevations, door tagging, and several other design tasks. Since it is a brand-new project, it was especially interesting to experience the different phases of the design process from the beginning.
In addition, I worked on several justice facility projects, including the Payette County Jail in Idaho. For this project, I developed multiple design charrettes and helped compile the overall study. At the start of the summer, I had little understanding of what a project study involved or why it was necessary. Through this experience, however, I gained a much deeper appreciation for the work that takes place before construction documents are ever produced.
I also contributed to projects such as the James Aviation Hangar and the Fort Wayne International Airport Hangar, where I primarily explored façade design concepts and generated ideas for the buildings’ exterior appearance. These are just a few of the projects I have had the opportunity to be involved with this summer. Each experience has been both educational and rewarding, helping me grow my design skills and broaden my understanding of the architectural profession.
Beyond the project work, I’ve enjoyed meeting so many new people and working alongside my mentors and colleagues. One thing I have especially appreciated is how supportive, kind, and helpful everyone has been. They have provided me with so many tools for success and have truly wanted to see me grow.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to intern at Elevatus this summer. It has been one of the greatest learning experiences of my journey so far, giving me valuable insight into the profession of architecture.
