The Fort Wayne Zoo has never been one to rest on its laurels. Known as one of the nation’s top-ranked zoos, it is always seeking new ways to enhance the experience—for both animals and guests.
So when leadership set out to reimagine its popular but aging sea lion exhibit, they envisioned a more natural habitat, improved animal care, and a refreshed environment that would both delight and educate.
That vision became Coastal Cove.
Elevatus was brought on to design the exhibit’s main attractions, including a signature lighthouse inspired by those along the Puget Sound. Rising from rugged faux cliffs, the lighthouse uses forced perspective to appear taller than it is. A pulsing LED light simulates the rhythm of a real coastal beacon. A connected structure discreetly stores salt and daily-use materials while maintaining a seamless design aesthetic.
The team also created a faux rocky beach area to support memorable guest experiences. Shade sails and shelter structures were added for guest comfort, and the entire exhibit is ADA accessible to ensure an inclusive experience.
Coastal Cove introduces harbor seals alongside the Zoo’s longtime sea lions, inviting guests to observe their unique behaviors and learn more about these playful marine mammals.
The project brought its share of challenges, including deteriorating concrete and unexpected soil conditions. But through quick adaptation and close collaboration, the team kept progress steady and the schedule intact.
Today, Coastal Cove reflects the Zoo’s enduring commitment to education, inclusion, and exceptional animal care. It’s a place where seals and sea lions glide through blue waters, where guests pause beneath coastal shade, and where a lighthouse gently glows, guiding families back, season after season.
