When the SDI Flat Roll Group needed a space that could bring their operations, innovation, and client engagement under one roof, they knew it had to happen at Electric Works. They envisioned a place that could house their state-of-the-art scanner, provide dedicated production and showroom areas, and foster collaboration with clients to explore and refine new project ideas.
Elevatus, the lead architect for the full Electric Works campus, was brought in to turn this vision into reality. The design team partnered closely with the SDI team to translate their needs into a tailored space that functions as both a creative workshop and a professional headquarters.
The result is SDI Tru-Steel HD: a dynamic environment located in the southwest corner of Building 26, designed with flexibility, functionality, and forward-thinking aesthetics in mind.
The first floor of the facility includes a welcoming reception area, a sleek showroom, and a scanning lab, along with open collaboration zones for client engagement. The mezzanine floats above the energy below, offering offices, open workspaces, and a dedicated huddle room. Materiality was a key part of the story: custom wood-grain metal panels—crafted by SDI’s own Flat Roll Group—were featured as a signature design element, highlighted by linear downlighting in the reception and even integrated into a custom-faced garage door between the showroom and scanning room.
From the beginning, the project was shaped by thoughtful coordination and problem-solving. A raw shell space meant the design team had to navigate complex challenges—from setting mezzanine heights that accommodated scanner clearance to rerouting major ductwork. Close collaboration with end-users led to meaningful design enhancements, including the signature garage door that became both functional and expressive.
The finished space now stands as a testament to collaboration, creativity, and craft. It’s more than an office space—it’s a space that reflects the identity of the SDI Flat Roll Group, supports their daily needs, and inspires their future.
