When the natatorium at the local high school closed, the community faced a significant loss — the only year-round swimming facility in the area was gone. In response, a group of dedicated community leaders united to spearhead the development of a new, state-of-the-art aquatic center.
Through a strategic public-private partnership involving the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation, Ancilla College, Saint Joseph Health System, and the Plymouth Community School Corporation, the vision for a new indoor competition natatorium began to crystallize.
Elevatus was selected to transform this vision into a reality, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.
The new aquatic center features a 10-lane competition pool, complete with a deep end designed for diving competitions, which allows it to also be used by community first responders for deep water rescue training. Spectator seating for 435, located in a mezzanine that overlooks the pool, provides an optimal viewing experience. The facility is thoughtfully designed to include modern locker rooms, restrooms, a concession stand, coaches’ offices, training areas, and versatile rooms available for event rentals.
With a forward-looking approach, the center was also designed to seamlessly connect to a planned adjacent hotel, ensuring future expansion opportunities.
The facility is named in honor of a devoted community servant and aquatics advocate, whose last wish was for the community to have an indoor aquatic center. The new Dr. Susan Bardwell Aquatics Center stands as a modern hub where the community can compete, play, and embrace a healthy lifestyle.
