HLKB has been recognized by peer and user groups for its commitment to design excellence and innovation. This recognition includes over 200 design awards at national, regional and state levels. The firm was selected from the nation’s 25,000 architectural practices to receive the American Institute of Architect’s 2001 Architecture Firm Award, the Institute’s highest honor for design practice.

Since opening in 1961, HLKB has grown from 15 people to more than 50. Their business philosophy is simple: Do a common thing uncommonly well. And that includes how they approach their software asset management.

“We can’t imagine working without a software asset management program in place,” says David Nandell, HLKB’s IT Professional. “It’s professional. And we want everything we do to be professional.” David established a software management program at HLKB after he joined the company in 1999. His biggest challenge? Managing and keeping control of more than 50 workstations while being a staff of one. “I basically do it all,” he says. “I do an annual budget that I present to the partners, I’m the help desk, and I’m also the system administrator.”

By making software asset management a priority at HLKB, David saw the benefits right away. “It makes our lives simpler,” he says. “Everything is just way easier to manage. Being in an open environment with a lot of architects, I can’t walk around to check our software. It’s much more efficient to have all our licenses organized in one spot.” Reliability is also a key advantage. “It’s just too risky to download something because it could be full of viruses," he says. “We want reliability. If you know where it came from you can trust it.”

HLKB’s software asset management plan has helped them run more efficiently and stay focused on what they do best—create great buildings.
